South Express Cycleway - construction

What

Construction of the South Express cycleway, a safe cycle route across the west of the city.

Why

Our network of cycleways are making it safer and easier for people to cycle. More people cycling eases the pressure on our roads.

Where

Through Middleton Park and along Lochee Road, Wharenui Road, Peverel Street and Centennial Avenue.

When

Work will start mid-January 2021 and is expected to be completed by May 2021 (weather dependent). Work will be undertaken between Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm.

Contact

The contractor is Downer. Phone 027 459 6676 or email ben.whitham@downer.co.nz between Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.

Details

We are building a section of cycleway that will connect to sections of cycleway currently being built on Elizabeth Street and Suva Street.

A shared path will be built through Middleton Park until it meets Lochee Road. The cycleway will cross Lochee Road and a two-way cycleway will continue on the north side of Lochee Road up to Wharenui Road.

After crossing Wharenui Road the two-way cycleway will continue on the north side of Peverel Street before turning into Centennial Avenue where it will continue on the east side of the road.

It then goes through Riccarton where it will link into the Northern Line Cycleway and the shared paths in South Hagley Park.
