Details

On 29 August 2019 Christchurch City Council made some decisions to the earthquake legacy issues in South New Brighton and Southshore, which included building engineered, set-back bunds to reduce flood risk to South New Brighton School, Seafield Place and properties on Estuary Road. This responded to community concerns about the flooding possibility in this area as a result of earthquake damage.

We will construct the northern section of the bunds which include:

  • Constructing and planting 500m of new engineered, set-back bund south of Bridge Street to South New Brighton School, with a 2m wide path on top
  • Removing and replacing some vegetation and trees. The removals are needed for the works to be done, and have been approved by the Community Board. Once the bunds are constructed, native shrubs and trees will be planted, outnumbering those removed

We have built the southern section between the school and playground, but the COVID lockdown and bird nesting season meant a delay to the northern section from Bridge Street to the school.

Impacts in the area

  • Bridge Reserve including the footpath from Bridge Street to the school will be closed to all users.  A diversion will be in place via Estuary Road
  • For health and safety reasons, properties with direct access into Bridge Reserve will be asked to use other green spaces during construction
  • Part of the public carpark will be closed in South New Brighton Park, off Beatty Street, but there will still be public parking available in this area

However, we’ll make sure the access to the following places will be maintained at all times from the end of Beatty Street:

  • South New Brighton Park south of the Jetty
  • South New Brighton Community Centre
  • Play Centre
  • Playground
  • South New Brighton school
