Details

The project will be broken down to three phases of work. We will soon begin Phase 1, then before starting Phase 2, we’ll deliver another update notice to you detailing the works and any expected impacts in your street and area. The purpose of this first notice is to provide you with a general overview of the project and its timeframe.

The existing water supply main pipeline on Eastern Terrace, adjacent to the Heathcote River, is critical for maintaining the supply of drinking water to this part of the city.

The new pipeline is a large, 600mm-diameter ductile iron pipe which will be laid on the new alignment shown in orange on the map (see reverse). The alignment starts at the Palatine Terrace Reserve and runs under the Heathcote River, up Malcolm Avenue, before making its way around to the corner of Domett Street and Wilsons Road. The total length is about 2,500m. The new pipeline will be connected to the existing pipeline at Palatine Terrace Reserve, at the corner of Domett/Wilsons, and at Sandwich Road.

Phase 1 – Site investigations (starting and finishing Nov 2021)

This involves pot-holing on the new pipeline to identify any areas where existing services will clash with the new pipeline. To do this, a vacuum-sucker hydro truck will be used to dig small holes along the alignment for surveying, and these will then be filled and covered. The main reason for this is to reduce the risk of issues during the works which have the potential to extend the project and cause added delays and impacts to residents.

  • Traffic impact – Rolling road closures during the days, removed in evenings.

Phase 2 – Enabling works (starting Nov 2021 and finishing Feb 2022)

This involves relocating any of the existing pipes, cables or other obstacles that need removing to complete the works. These are mainly along the pipeline shown in orange on the map, with some other works on Eastern Terrace (shown in red).

  • Traffic impact – Road closures with detours.

Phase 3 – Main works (starting Feb 2022 and finishing Dec 2022)

This is the final step to actually construct the new pipeline.

  • Traffic impact – Road closures with detours.
