Work is about to start on the earthquake repairs and strengthening of Halswell Quarry Park’s historic buildings, including the Old Stone House.

A well-known landmark, the Old Stone House marks the entrance to Halswell Quarry Park and dates back to 1927 when it was built as the Halswell Quarry Manager’s Residence.

Stabilisation work was carried out on the stone-built house after the earthquakes, and requires repairs and strengthening.

Contractors Dominion Constructors Ltd have been engaged by Christchurch City Council to do that work.

They have also been engaged to repair and restore the Halswell Quarry’s Singleman’s Quarters, a stone building which dates back to 1922. The Quarters were built to house both families and temporary workers for the quarry and is listed in the Christchurch City Plan as a Group 2 protected heritage building.

Dominion will also carry out structural repairs to the Quarry’s crusher plant buildings, which date back to 1912.

The work on all the buildings should be completed by the year’s end.
