Our general sense of wellbeing and quality of life often depends on having caring and supportive networks. Good relationships between people in the neighbourhood build a sense of belonging in the community, and promotes social cohesion.

Changes to our Community Outcomes and Strategic Priorities

The Council approved a new 2020 strategic framework on 19 December 2019 and this is currently part of the consultation document on the annual plan.

Information on our revised Community Outcomes and Strategic Priorities is currently being developed.

What this means for our district

  • People have a strong sense of belonging and are actively involved in the life of Christchurch.
  • Communities are supported to undertake initiatives that make their local area a better place to live and visit.
  • Vibrant and resilient community and volunteer groups provide support, encourage participation and mobilise resources.
  • People have strong social networks and someone to turn to in time of need.
  • Appropriate services are available within local communities.

How we are contributing

We support a strong sense of community by providing facilities including libraries, recreation centres, and community centres across the city that can be used by the community. Community Boards have strong links to local communities and support community led initiatives. The council also provides and sponsors community events and festivals which allow opportunities for local communities to come together.

How you can help

Contact your local Community Board(external link) if you would like to discuss an initiative which you think would build a greater sense of community in your neighbourhood.
