Rubbish and recycling
The Council provides a range of services to manage the safe disposal of commercial and household waste, including the kerbside collection of household rubbish, recycling and organics.
We encourage all households and businesses to help reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Sustainability and a clean environment are what we aim to achieve for our Garden City. The way we dispose of waste in our home impacts on the environment we live in.
It is estimated that the Christchurch City Council’s kerbside collection service, rolled out in early 2009, will annually divert 40,000 tonnes of organic material and 7000 tonnes of recyclables from the Kate Valley Landfill – reducing the amount of household waste sent to landfill by one-third.
There are ways in which you can reduce waste in the home and at work by shopping smarter, choosing items with less packaging or starting a worm farm or composting in the backyard.
Businesses can introduce sustainability initiatives in the workplace like reducing the amount of paper that is used and recycling old computers and electronic waste safely.
Schools can provide recycling facilities around their grounds and encourage children to use the different bins properly. They can also introduce many programmes to educate students on the importance of learning ways to reduce, reuse and recycle at home.
