Rates demand
Changing the name on your rate demand
To change a name because of marriage
The Council needs to sight a copy of the marriage certificate to update the records. The person must already be the property owner on the Certificate of Title otherwise a Notice of Sale/Change of Ownership is required.
Fax it to the Council on (03) 941 8591 .
To go back to a maiden name from a married name
The Certificate of Title would need to be changed before we can amend our records.
To delete a name when the owner or joint owner is deceased
The Council's rates records for the property must show the same ownership details as the property's Certificate of Title. Contact the Solicitor handling the estate who will forward notification to the Council of the Transmission to the surviving joint owner.
To delete a name because of the ending of a relationship
The Council's rates records for the property must show the same ownership details as the property's Certificate of Title. In the event of a relationship split, the rates can only be changed once the matrimonial or relationship settlement is complete. Contact the Solicitor handling the settlement who can forward notification of the transaction to the Council.
To change a name if the property has been sold or transferred into a Trust
Your solicitor is normally responsible for updating this and he/she should do this by way of a Notice of Sale. This also needs to be updated on the Certificate of Title.
If your name has been changed by deed poll
A Change of Ownership form will need to be forwarded to the rates department from your Solicitor. The Certificate of Title would also need to be changed.
If the property now has a rate paying tenant
New legislation has altered the rules on this. Now the lease needs to be registered on the Certificate of Title, for the whole of the rating unit and longer than a period of ten years.
To amend the spelling of a name
If a name has been spelt incorrectly on your rates instalment notice, please call us and we will check that this has been entered correctly from a Notice of Sale from the Solicitor. If the information from the Notice of Sale is incorrect, a correct copy would be required from the Solicitor.
The Certificate of Title shows the correct ownership of a property and can be obtained from Land Information New Zealand.
