Dog safety education programmes

The Animal Control Education Team offers safety education programmes for schools, community groups and businesses around dog bite prevention.

Our educators are available to help your business or community group learn about entering any property safely when dogs are present.

Did you know every day on average, in Christchurch, two people will get bitten by a dog? Many of these incidents are preventable – all it takes is a little knowledge and some common sense.

In these sessions the ACO educators offer some insights into dog behaviour, how to read a dog’s body language, and teaching the skills on how to avoid putting yourself in danger when in a situation with a potentially threatening dog.

Primary school children have a special presentation featuring Angus, the Animal Control mascot. We cater to school groups of up to sixty students, but find smaller groups work best. Students have the opportunity to actually practice their new skills with a real dog if they want to – all under the constant supervision of an experienced ACO and in a safe environment.
