Council subsidy

If you want to install a solar water heater, the Council currently subsidises the total fee by $240. The subsidy is already deducted from the calculated deposit at the time of lodgement. This equates to a $380 deposit payable at time of lodgement of the application.

The Council has introduced the subsidy to encourage residents to use energy-saving systems. It is one of 28 initiatives in the Sustainable Energy Strategy for Christchurch 2008–18. The subsidy is funded by the sale of carbon credits, gained by using gas from the Burwood Landfill to power QEII Park Recreation and Sport Centre. The subsidy is not funded by rates and is subject to review.

Fees

The overall cost of a building consent for solar water heating is calculated when the consent processing is completed. The final fee includes processing time charged, inspection fees, and fees for issuing a code compliance certificate once the building work has been inspected. Any additional fees are payable when the applicant uplifts the building consent.

Refer to the Building consent schedule of fees [PDF 185KB].
