Te Papa/Ōtākaro Avon River Precinct

ChristchurchCompleted

New Zealand’s largest ever urban renewal programme.

Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct stemmed from a public desire for the iconic Christchurch river and its surrounds to be accentuated as a feature in the post-quake city centre. The $120m programme of works, overseen by Ōtākaro, the forerunner to Rau Paenga, included conversion of Oxford Terrace on the sunny, city side of the street into a promenade; the restoration of Victoria Square; the Margaret Mahy Family Playground, and improved access to the river.
