KiwiAble

KiwiAble is based within the Recreation and Sport Unit and is funded by the Christchurch City Council and The Canterbury Community Trust.

KiwiAble's vision is to increase opportunities for inclusive recreation participation for people with disabilities.

Based on the principles of inclusion, KiwiAble is committed to adopting an approach that supports participation and access for people with disabilities.

Key areas

The programme includes the following key areas:

  • Administering the KiwiAble Leisure Card – a scheme that is free to join which provides discounted recreational opportunities to over 60 facilities for people with disabilities. To be eligible, individuals must receive either an invalids or sickness benefit, be on long term ACC or receive a child disability allowance
  • facilitating the KiwiAble Recreation Network. A network of disability community agencies, organisations and individuals that have an interest in recreation, sport and leisure.
  • facilitating a Performing Arts Programme
  • delivering disability awareness training to Council Leisure Centre staff in partnership with other key organisations
  • providing talks to educational establishments on the history and development of the KiwiAble programme
  • developing resources that promote the philosophy of inclusion
  • offering advice on sport, recreation and leisure options
  • addressing barriers to participation
  • continuing to develop forward looking services.
