Cultural diversity

Here at the Christchurch City Council, we have a strong commitment to providing opportunities for various community groups to connect and embrace the cultural diversity within our city.

The Council was the first local authority and one of the first 11 organisations to be recognised by the Human Rights Commission for our outstanding contributions to cultural diversity. We were awarded for these initiatives at the New Zealand Diversity Action Forum in both 2007 and 2008.

The Council’s initiatives that support cultural diversity are a combination of education programmes, community events, consultation, and funding.

Our contributions to cultural diversity are measured against Community Outcomes – key visions for the city identified by the Christchurch community which guide the Council’s strategic planning through the Long Term Council Community Plan (LTCCP).

Under the Local Government Act 2002, the Council is required to monitor its progress toward achieving the Community Outcomes.
